Make rich, creamy chocolate milk at home using simple cocoa powder. This recipe is quick to prepare and lets you control the sweetness, making it better than store-bought options.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons Granulated Sugar or Maple Syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the cocoa powder, sugar (or sweetener), and salt in a small bowl or directly in the glass you plan to use.
  2. Add about 2 tablespoons of the milk to the dry ingredients. Stir vigorously until a smooth, thick paste (a slurry) forms with no lumps. This step prevents clumps.
  3. Pour in the remaining milk and the vanilla extract.
  4. Stir or whisk until everything is fully combined and the mixture is uniform in color.
  5. Taste the milk. Add more sweetener if you prefer it sweeter, stirring well to dissolve.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a cold, refreshing drink.

Notes

  • For a low-sugar option, start with 1 tablespoon of sweetener or use a zero-calorie alternative.
  • To make a batch of chocolate syrup ahead of time, combine 1/2 cup cocoa powder, 1 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan. Heat gently until sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens slightly. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Use 2-3 tablespoons of syrup per cup of milk.
  • Use cold milk for the best texture.
