Make superior hot chocolate using real chocolate for a deep flavor and velvety texture. This easy stovetop recipe beats any mix.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet real chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until the mixture is steaming but not boiling.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder and brown sugar.
  3. Slowly whisk the cocoa and sugar mixture into the warm milk until fully dissolved.
  4. Add the finely chopped real chocolate to the saucepan. Whisk constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. This step creates the rich texture.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Continue to heat gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring, until the hot chocolate reaches your desired temperature. Do not let it boil.
  6. Pour immediately into mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.

Notes

  • For a thicker hot chocolate, reduce the milk by 1/2 cup and substitute with 1/2 cup of half-and-half.
  • Use high-quality chocolate bars for the best flavor outcome.
  • This recipe is easily doubled for larger batches.
