A simple and delicious recipe for homemade applesauce, perfect for using up fresh apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds apples (about 68 medium), peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Place the apple pieces in a large saucepan.
  2. Add the water, sugar (if using), cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  3. Cover the saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the apples are very tender, stirring occasionally.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  6. Mash the apples with a potato masher or fork until you reach your desired consistency. For a smoother applesauce, you can use an immersion blender or carefully transfer to a regular blender.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or cinnamon if needed.
  8. Let the applesauce cool before serving.

Notes

  • For a naturally sweeter applesauce, use sweeter apple varieties like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp.
  • If you prefer a chunkier applesauce, mash the apples less.
  • Store homemade applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • This recipe is a great base for meal planning and can be a healthy alternative to store-bought options.
