Make this simple, spiced pear butter in your slow cooker. It creates a thick, flavorful spread perfect for toast, pancakes, or as a homemade food gift.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds ripe pears (about 12 medium), peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled, cored, and quartered pears into your slow cooker.
  2. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and water over the pears.
  3. Stir the ingredients gently to combine.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the pears are very soft.
  5. Carefully transfer the cooked pear mixture to a blender or use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker. Blend until completely smooth.
  6. If you prefer a thicker concentrate, transfer the pureed mixture to a large saucepan. Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring often, for 30 to 60 minutes, until the butter reduces and thickens to your desired consistency.
  7. For canning, ladle the hot pear butter into sterilized half-pint jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Wipe rims clean. Process in a boiling water bath canner for 10 minutes (adjust time for altitude). Remove jars and let cool completely before checking seals.

Notes

  • Use firm, ripe pears like Bartlett or Bosc for the best flavor and texture.
  • For a vanilla note, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract after blending.
  • If you want a salted caramel flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the brown sugar with 1/4 cup of packed dark brown sugar and add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt.
  • This spread is naturally gluten free and makes a wonderful homemade food gift during the fall season.
