Make your own rich, chocolatey hot cocoa mix using simple pantry staples. This big batch recipe is easy to prepare, stores well, and makes a creamy, comforting beverage every time you add hot milk or water. It is also perfect for holiday food gifts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups granulated white sugar
  • 2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder (optional, omit for dairy-free)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for depth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your dry ingredients: sugar, cocoa powder, dry milk powder (if using), salt, cinnamon, and espresso powder.
  2. Place all ingredients into a very large bowl.
  3. Whisk the ingredients together thoroughly for at least two minutes. You must mix well to break up any clumps in the cocoa powder and distribute the salt and cinnamon evenly.
  4. Taste a small amount mixed with hot water to check sweetness and chocolate intensity. Adjust sugar or cocoa powder as needed.
  5. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to an airtight container. This recipe makes a big batch suitable for storage.
  6. To serve, combine 1/3 cup of the mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Stir until completely dissolved and enjoy your cozy beverage.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free or vegan option, simply omit the dry milk powder. The mix will still create a rich drink when mixed with hot water or non-dairy milk.
  • This mix makes an excellent holiday food gift. Package it in clean, dry jars and tie a ribbon around the lid.
  • Store the dry mix in a cool, dark pantry. It keeps well for up to six months.
  • If you want a creamier texture without using powdered milk, try adding 1/4 cup of finely ground white chocolate chips to the mix.
