Make this simple, comforting pizza pasta bake for a quick weeknight dinner. It combines classic pizza flavors with satisfying pasta, all cooked in one pot and baked until golden and cheesy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound penne pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound Italian sausage or ground beef (optional)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (24 ounce) jar pizza or marinara sauce
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup mini pepperoni slices
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. If using meat, cook the Italian sausage or ground beef in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Stir in the uncooked pasta, pizza sauce, broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is mostly tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  6. Stir in the pepperoni and 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese into the pasta mixture.
  7. Transfer the pasta mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  8. Top evenly with the remaining 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese and the Parmesan cheese.
  9. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden brown.
  10. Let the pizza pasta bake rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, skip the meat and add 1 cup of sliced mushrooms or chopped bell peppers with the onion.
  • You can substitute your favorite pizza toppings like black olives or cooked ground turkey.
  • This recipe is great for meal prep; assemble it completely, cover, and refrigerate for up to 2 days before baking.
