Make this bold, buttery Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce in 15 minutes. It combines fresh garlic, herbs, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce for a zesty, savory topping perfect for steak, chicken, shrimp, or dipping bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened or melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 shallots, finely minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. If using softened butter, mix all ingredients together in a bowl until well combined. If using melted butter (for a dipping sauce consistency), gently melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.
  2. Add the minced garlic and shallots to the melted butter and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, but do not brown the garlic.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the parsley, chives, thyme, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon zest, lemon juice, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes, if using.
  4. Whisk the mixture well until all ingredients are incorporated into the butter.
  5. Season generously with salt and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  6. Serve immediately while warm as a dipping sauce or drizzle over grilled steak, shrimp, or vegetables.

Notes

  • For a compound butter meant for spreading, use softened butter and mix ingredients thoroughly, then roll into a log using plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours before slicing.
  • This sauce pairs well with grilled meats, roasted potatoes, and steamed asparagus.
  • For a bolder flavor, add a dash of your favorite hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
