Make a truly decadent, rich, and creamy hot chocolate spiked with your favorite spirit. This adult hot chocolate recipe is perfect for cozy winter nights or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces good quality semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup Irish Cream liqueur (like Bailey’s) OR Bourbon OR Peppermint Schnapps
  • Whipped cream and chocolate shavings for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat until steam rises and small bubbles form around the edges, but do not let it boil.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to the warm milk mixture.
  3. Whisk constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth and uniform. This creates your rich melted chocolate drink base.
  4. Return the saucepan to low heat and warm gently for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, until heated through. Do not boil.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in your chosen liquor (Irish Cream, Bourbon, or Peppermint Schnapps).
  6. Pour the boozy hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired. Serve immediately for a warm spiked dessert drink.

Notes

  • For a thicker, more decadent texture, substitute 1/2 cup of the milk with 1/2 cup of evaporated milk.
  • If you are setting up a hot chocolate bar, prepare the base chocolate mixture first, then allow guests to add their own alcohol choice.
  • To make this a peppermint schnapps hot chocolate, use dark chocolate and add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract along with the liquor.
  • Bourbon hot chocolate pairs well with a pinch of cinnamon added to the dry ingredients.
